Reading and writing skills are assessed based on two components: a Reading Comprehension Component (one 90 minute session) and a Writing Component (two 60 minute sessions). The Writing I (60 minutes) prompt asks students to “present a piece of original narrative prose of approximately 200-250 words on a topic of their choice or on a topic from suggestions provided through pictures or words. For Writing II (90 minutes), A. “students will be asked to present a short piece of writing in response to a prescribed task (an organization of information through charts/diagrams/outlines, a recount of particular circumstances of an incident, a thank-you/request letter, a diary/journal entry, a factual account of personal social (or work) activities, guidelines on safety in the classroom, in the gymnasium, etc… or directions for crafts/ recipes/ sequence of events; and B. “Students will be asked to revise and edit a piece of writing that contains several errors: grammatical/ punctuation/ capitalization/ spelling/paragraphing, etc…” They must use strategies that prove their skills in the conventions of writing. And finally, in Writing III (60 minutes), “students will be asked to write to a specific situation provided, composing a piece of writing of approximately 200-250 words.
