Writing a Fantasy Story
Instructions:
Begin by reading the first chapter of a fantasy novel, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente. Pay special attention to the character of September, as you will be completing a short assignment to go along with the reading.

Next, you will take some time to become familiar with the fantasy genre. Here are some of the characteristics of fantasy:
• contains elements that are not realistic
• talking animals
• magical powers
• often set in a medieval universe
• possibly involving mythical beings

Now that you know all about Fantasy and what it entails, it is your turn to develop a fantasy world and to create people to inhabit it. Use this handout to create a backstory and develop a character. But remember: More detail is better! You can go above and beyond what is on this handout. This is just to give you some ideas to guide your writing.
